All it takes is one wrong jump to make a happy birthday into a wallet gouging nightmare. Bounce houses are one of the most popular party rentals, and if you want to avoid the accidents and lawsuits that might go along with it, it might be a good idea to follow a few safety precautions.

First of all, when calling around ask who has insurance. Some operators may have you sign for full responsibility, in which case you could check with your homeowner’s insurance to see what is covered. Bounce house operators should carry insurance, however. Have them provide you with a copy of their policy.

Next, ask the operators what experience they have and what training they have received? It doesn’t seem too hard to blow up a big bounce house, right? Believe it or not, there are plenty of safety precautions that should be in place to provide a safe environment. Neglect of any of these could result in injury, and no one wants that to happen, no matter who’s going to pick up the bill.

Then, upon set up, make sure the following steps are put in place:

• A tarp belongs underneath the bounce house

• The bounce house should be weighed down with sandbags or stakes

• A thorough inspection should be made of the fully aired unit to insure there are no new holes or tears in the material

• An adult should be present at all times to supervise the bounce house play. It is not recommended that children under 3 use a bounce house, also a varied age group could be problematic if you have older children jumping around smaller ones.

• Every bounce house has a different limit of children – make sure this number is not exceeded

While there are still plenty of avenues for injury, following these steps will drastically reduce the possibility of injury, keeping the party a fun place for kids and adults alike.
