Taking nursing classes is very challenging for most RN students - many feel the pain of burnout after the second semester and often quit. Becoming an RN is a very rewarding career though, also offering attractive salaries and the benefit of a recession-proof job. By following a few simple rules, RN students will successfully be able to avoid burnout and reach graduation with the determination needed to enter the nursing profession.

1. Balance Schedule

Many nursing students are over-committed, often involved in extra-curricular activities. During nursing classes, especially during the second year, it is important for students to take a break from these activities. Also it is best to find quiet places to study away from the distractions of home, such as a library, coffee shop or a park. Students should rearrange their schedule if need be to allow plenty of study time and ample time to sleep also, as sleep is crucial.

2. Avoid Cramming

Nearly every student has at least once been guilty of cramming for a test. This practice is not a good habit to form in nursing school. Much of the information provided is necessary to learn and is often fairly easy to retain since much of it can be applied to common sense. Studying ahead of time and reading at a pace which allows information absorption is the best practice.

3. Designate Breaks

Developing a schedule of breaks during studying is very important. Every hour students should plan a small break and then an ultimate reward break at the end of the study session. The end break should include something desirable, such as a small treat, a hot bath or watching a favorite T.V show. By developing a routine with a reward, students will positively associate studying with the reward and it will be much more bearable.

4. Prepare For Clinicals & Labs

Clinical rotations and labs are a necessary part of RN classes. In order to avoid the confusion and frustration experienced by many, it is best to study the lab procedures and be familiar with them ahead of time. During clinical rotations, students must remind themselves that the tasks become easier with time.

RN Classes On-Site and Online?

When you are working toward a career as a nurse, one of the most important things to consider is where you will take your RN classes. Nursing is a very hot career right now, and there are several options for a nurse who has the right training. The right RN classes are a big part of finding the right job when you’re ready to begin working. The Benefits of Gaining RN Status An RN, or Registered Nurse, has the benefit of having proven that he or she possesses the necessary skills to be a good nurse. If you hold an RN certificate, you will be able to earn a higher salary. There are more job opportunities for registered nurses, as well. Once you hold a general RN certificate, you can also begin to pursue more specialized training that can lead to even higher salaries. Online Classes There are many RN classes offered through an online format. These classes mainly cover the academic aspects of nursing, such as anatomy and biology. If you are already working a regular job and attending classes at night or on weekends, online classes can fill in the gaps in your schooling nicely. They allow you to fit your school work in around the rest of your hectic life, and you can continue to pursue your certification even when you don’t have time to attend traditional on-site classes. You can’t gain a full RN certificate through online classes alone, but they are a good way to supplement any RN classes that you are attending. The Necessity of Some On-Site Classwork Nursing is a hands-on business, and there are some aspects of the job that can’t be taught online. You need to attend some on-site RN classes to learn the finer points of patient interaction, needle handling, and other parts of nursing that need to be practiced physically. On-site classes also give you an opportunity to work with a specialist who can give you tips and ideas from real world experience. There is no substitute for working closely with someone who has been a nurse in a real life situation. If you can afford the time necessary to complete RN classes at a physical school you will be glad you did.
