Camping is spending time in the open, using a primitive structure, usually a tent, or no shelter at all. It became popular in the 20th century. It can be used as a cheap form of accommodation for people frequenting large open- air events like music festivals.

• Camping can cover survivalists bearing not much more than their boots, to recreationalists who bring sources of electricity and heat and furniture.

• Camping is often savored alongside canoeing, climbing, fishing, hiking, hill-walking, Mountain Biking and swimming.

• Campsites vary from a bare patch of land, to a facility with fire rings, shared bathrooms and laundry facilities and other utilities.

• Necessary camping equipment includes a tent, first aid kit, hammer, sleeping bag (hopefully with a bedroll) and a flashlight. Insect repellents and sunscreen are advisable.

• It's wise to buy a tent that can house at least one more person than you foresee using it, for extra space.

• To get the best protection from the weather, choose a tent with a full rain fly, sealed seams, a tub floor and good ventilation.

• If you're new to camping, you may prefer to first choose a campground close to home that is run by a government agency – these will have consistent standards. If you're tent camping, avoid parks with recreational vehicles, or their generators and home entertainment systems will keep you awake through the night.

• You should test all camping gear before using it. Erect the tent in your backyard, try out sleeping bags in a room, cook on the stove and see how much light your lanterns emit, to make sure they will not fail you during your camping experience.

• You should choose a campsite based on its proximity to facilities you desire, such as bathrooms, showers, playgrounds and garbage disposal areas. Never choose a campsite in a hurry.

Campers can lose track of where they are easily, leading to unpleasant situations that could have been avoided. Success in camping depends on preparation and common sense. These few pointers will help you with a successful camping experience.
