The first thing you need to know is: When was the last time the brakes were changed? If you just bought the car, this is something to ask the dealer or whoever you bought it from. Another way to tell is if the brakes are making a noise, but this isn’t the most accurate gauge. Most modern brake systems have an early warning device built in to squeal when the brake pads are wearing thing, but sometimes dust and dirt can build up in the tires and cause the brakes to squeal as well. The only sure way to tell if a brake needs changed is to take the tire off and look at the brake pads. To change your breaks, follow these steps.
- This is a job that requires more than just a hydraulic jack. For this, you will need two jack stands. Jack up the car and place the jack stands underneath the axel. You may want to loosen the nuts on the tires first, as they will be difficult to remove after the car is jacked up.
- Remove the tires and take a look at the brake pads. If the brake pads are worn nearly to the shoe, it is time to change them. If the pads are worn completely down, you may need to change the rotor as well. The rotor could be damaged and may not react as well to the brake pads, decreasing the cars stopping power.
- Now, there are clips holding the calipers to the piston, remove the clips and the calipers. Replace the old brake pads with the new ones by simply sliding out the worn pads and placing the new ones into the grooves where the old ones were.
- The piston will need to be pushed back to its full open position. This will require a vice grip or a channel lock, or possibly a c- clamp. Place both sides of whatever tool you use on the piston to squeeze it back into the full open position. Now you should be able to put the calipers back on.
- Once the calipers are back on, replace the wheel and replace the nuts. Lower the car back down to the ground and give the nuts a final twist to make sure they are on tight.
- Get in the car and pump the brakes until they start to tighten back up. Take the car for a spin around the block to make sure they work.
