An Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT), also known more generally as an aircraft mechanic, is an individual who holds a Mechanic Certificate and is authorized to perform inspections, maintenance, and repairs on aircraft. Mechanic Certificates in the United States are issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Aviation maintenance schools offer training programs approved by the FAA that allow students to earn a Mechanic Certificate. An Inspection Authorization is an additional rating that is open to AMTs who have worked for three years in their field.

AMTs perform preventative maintenance, diagnosis and repair of faulty equipment, and keep detailed logs of the inspections, alterations and repairs they have worked on. AMTs may work on many different types of aircraft or they may be trained to work on a specific type of aircraft.

Prospective students interested in an aviation maintenance program should decide which area of specialization they would like to study. AMTs are trained in four areas of specialization. Power plant Mechanics work on aircraft engines; Airframe Mechanics maintain the structural components of an aircraft; Airframe-and-Power plant Mechanics (A&P Mechanics), who constitute the majority of mechanics that work on civilian aircraft, are authorized to work on both the airframe and power plant components of aircraft; and Avionics Technicians maintain the electronics and electrical systems of aircraft.

In addition to FAA certification, Avionics Technicians are required to obtain a radiotelephone license from the U. S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as well as a certification from one of the following: the National Association of Radio and Telecommunications Engineers, the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians, or the Electronic Technicians Association.

After choosing an area of specialization, prospective students should look for an accredited aviation maintenance school that offers a curriculum approved and supervised by the FAA. There are approximately 100 post-secondary institutions, such as junior colleges, technical colleges, community colleges, two-year colleges, and four-year colleges, which offer training in aviation maintenance. A student may earn a certificate, an aviation diploma, an associate’s degree, or a bachelor’s degree in aviation maintenance. These programs include a general curriculum in aviation maintenance in addition to the required course work for a student’s area of specialization.
