If you are a fan of Sega’s Dreamcast, chances are you want to have most, if not all, of the accessories that are available in the market. You should familiarize yourself with the accessories and what their uses are, so you will know which ones you will have to buy. If you spend most of your time using the system, it would be best to save up and buy all of the items in the accessories line, so you can make the most out of your Dreamcast experience. Here are some guidelines on the accessories, and how they can make your Dreamcast experience a more enriching one.
Step 1: One of the most important accessories is the Dreamcast memory card, or the VMU (Visual Memory Unit). It has a monochrome LCD screen, two gaming buttons and a D-Pad. The VMU enables you to play games loaded from specific Dreamcast games like a Chao game which has been transferred from Sonic Adventure; there are also a number of downloadable games from the internet. The VMU can also display a list of saved game information stored on it.
Step 2: The Dreamcast mouse and keyboard are essential when you need to use the included, fully-functional web browser. They are also supported by other games such as Quake 3, The Typing of the Dead, Railroad Tycoon 2 and Phantasy Star Online.
Step 3: A lot of the Dreamcast games supported a Jump Pack or a rumble pack, which can be bought separately and then plugged into the controller. The Dreamcast controller has a design similar to Sega Saturn’s analog controller; it has a D-Pad, an analog stick, four action buttons, two analog triggers on its underside and a Start button. It also has two slots that can hold the rumble pack or memory cards.
Step 4: The microphone peripheral is similar in design to the memory pack or VMU; it is made of gray plastic and inserted into a VMU slot on the controller. The Arcade Stick has six buttons with the same microswitch features seen on commercial arcade games.
These are the basic Dreamcast accessories, which will make playing the game a more complete experience. Depending on your needs and desires, you can choose which ones to buy right away – and which ones you can live without for the time being.
There are lot of rumors for 2012 or 2013 release date. I'm sure if there's a community of people desiring it, then Sega will resurrect the Dreamcast. If Sega releases Shenmue 3, on the Xbox 360/PS3 or XBLA/PSN, I believe there will not be a Dreamcast 2 anytime soon. I made a short video of my Dreamcast with VGA Box and audio accessories on my YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/user/davidsdiego
