There are two main factors involved with choosing a good operating system for your home PC or laptop: cost and usability.

Surprisingly, most users do not know all of their options available when it comes to picking an operating system for their computer. While the majority of users are most familiar with a Windows environment, there are a growing number of users who are using Mac and even Linux.

If you are opting for an operating system that will provide you with the most customizable experience for the best price, Linux will be the choice for you. With a seemingly unlimited list of different versions of Linux available, the most used is Linux Mint for it’s easy transition from other OS environments and there is an immensely large group of users that have formed support forums online to help the everyday user accomplish more with their system. The best part about Linux Mint is it’s cost: free. This operating system can be downloaded from the Linux website, as well as several other places for free. It will never cost anything to update or continue to use this operating system making it great for those on a budget or for a business owner looking to save potentially thousands on their computer system.

Windows is a great standby if you are not willing to try a new operating system or have programs that depend on Windows in order to run properly. Windows is also useful for those in an office environment who are not wanting to spend the time training new employees to use a new system as Windows is the OS that most computer users are familiar with. Windows offers minimal customization available on their newer releases, but controlling many aspects of your computer is not accessible to the average user.

Mac is another classic operating system that is good for design and drafting programs. Many users are comfortable in a Mac environment, but there is little customization available with this operating system. It can be difficult to change even basic items, such as the background of the desktop and the style and color of your folders.

Overall, when choosing an operating system there should be several factors considered including what you mainly plan to be using the computer for, how many users will the computer have, what you want the computer to do, and how you want the computer to perform for each user. The main thing to remember is that it is your computer, not a corporation’s computer, and you have the power to do anything you want to your computer. You paid a pretty penny for the computer, so enjoy it to the fullest extent with the right operating system for your needs.
