A microwave oven is a handy kitchen appliance for everything from heating a mug of water to cooking dinner. It’s easy, though, to not notice food splatters building up on the inside walls of your microwave until they’ve been there long enough to bake onto the surface with the strength of industrial adhesive. Not only does food residue look ugly, it makes the inside of your microwave smell bad and can affect the taste of food you cook in there. This simple process can help remove food splatters you thought were permanent.

Step 1: Remove the glass carousel and the plastic carousel base from your microwave. Put them in a sink full of warm, soapy water to soak.

Step 2: Use warm, soapy water and a soft rag to wipe away any recent residue inside the microwave.

Step 3: Fill a microwave safe bowl about two-thirds full with water. Set it in the microwave and cook it on high power for five minutes. The steam from the water should loosen stuck-on food residue.

Step 4: Carefully remove the bowl full of hot water. Immediately use a solution of vinegar water on a soft rag to scrub the inside of the microwave. Use about one tablespoon of vinegar to a quart of water. Be sure to check the ceiling of the microwave, and don’t forget the inside of the door. Be careful not to shove residue into the vent holes on the inside of the microwave.

Step 5: If there is more food residue that didn’t come off, repeat steps 3 and 4 until the microwave is clean.

Step 6: Use clear, warm water and a clean soft rag to give the microwave a final rinse. If you have found any spots where the coating is flaking off the microwave, don’t remove any more of the coating than has already fallen off. Be aware you’ll have to buy a new microwave soon--this exposure of the surface under the coating may cause sparks while cooking.

Step 7: Wipe any remaining food off the carousel, rinse and dry it, and return it to the microwave. Be careful to line it up properly on the base, or it can fall off the next time you cook.
