This does not mean that the rug is ruined or destroyed. A person can take the time to clean and restore their beautiful wool oriental rug. For rugs that are not stained, they should be cleaned at least yearly to maintain it.
To see if the rug is dirty, lift a corner and hit the back of the rug hard. If a large amount of dirt or debris comes out of the area then it is definite that the rug needs to be cleaned. Another way to see if the rug needs to cleaned is to rub a finger or hand on the carpet for a few seconds. If they are dirty then it means that the rug needs to be cleaned.
If a person doesn't want to or have the time to clean their wool oriental rug, they can always hire a professional to do so. It is also recommended to have a professional clean larger rugs since it can be difficult to clean by oneself. For smaller to medium sized rugs the owner of the rug can clean it themselves.
