Whether you just found out that your back window tint is too dark according to your state laws or you just decided that you’d like to let a little more sunlight through the window, the fact is you want to remove the window tint you had installed. These quick, easy steps will allow you to do so in a way that will leave your back window clean and clear.

The first step is to remove anything that may get in your way or be damaged by the liquids you will be using. This includes lights that are mounted on the back dash, any electronic equipment you may have installed, etc.

Then place a large trash bag or some other type of plastic drape over the whole back window, making sure that all of the glass is covered. Spray down the outside of the glass liberally with water and place the drape over the window. Trim away the extra plastic until the cover is approximately the same size as the glass and secure it with paint-safe tape. Lay a cover over the back dash and seat of your vehicle and, using a spray bottle, apply ammonia to the inside of the window. Make sure the area you’re working in is well ventilated as breathing ammonia vapors in enclosed spaces can be dangerous. To prevent the ammonia from evaporating, use more plastic to also cover the inside of the glass. After the plastic is secured, leave the vehicle parked outside in the heat for forty-five minutes to an hour to allow the solution to dissolve the adhesive.

Now, using a razor blade, raise the film in the corner of the window which will allow you to begin peeling it off. Make sure during this step that the plastic cover remains in place to ensure that no ammonia is allowed to dry. However, if this happens and the glue begins to harden, reapply a small ammount of ammonia while peeling.

After the entire sheet of film is removed, there will still be a certain amount of adhesive remaining on the window. This substance can be removed with more ammonia and an super fine steel wool. You should also be sure to dry the glass before the ammonia dries. Finally, a bottle of window cleaner and some paper towels should have your window as clean and clear as it was before the tint was applied.
