How to Do Room Darknening Blinds
Creating a room-darkening shade requires blackout lining. This can be purchased from any store that sells curtain or drapery fabric. First measure the space to be covered so that the correct amount of material can be bought. Add two and a half inches to the top, one and a half inches to the bottom and half an inch to each side. The lining can be covered with beautiful fabric for an elegant Roman shade.

Sew the pieces together with the sewing machine with a half-inch seam, leaving an opening on one side for turning.
Trim the seams to one-fourth of an inch, clip the corners, and turn the "envelope" so the woven side of the room-darkening material and the right side of the curtain fabric are showing.
Turn down the top so it will accommodate the rod, and make a one inch hem on the bottom. Stitch these in place, turning in about a fourth of an inch.
Measure and place a strip of ribbon about two inches from the front side of the curtain. On the back, place the shade tape so it matches the ribbon. Stitch in place. Thread cord through the shade tape.
Thread the curtain rod through the top pocket and hang. Adjust curtain using the cords. This will make an elegant shade for a window.
Larger spaces will need to be covered with panel track blinds. To stop light seepage under a door, use rubber seals. If a completely dark room is desired, electronic devices that emit light will need to be removed. Never cover them: This will create a fire hazard.
