A common tool used for training horses is a plastic bag. The sound a plastic bag makes, and the way the bag moves make it an ideal desensitization tool (desensitization is the process of getting a horse accustomed to frightening objects and sounds). As you work with the plastic bag, remember - you are not trying to frighten your horse with the bag, you are trying to get your horse to become unafraid! Do not act as though you are trying to attack your horse with your plastic bag. Behave normally as you try these exercises, and always reward the horse when he stops reacting, not when he is frightened.
The crinkling sound of a plastic bag is the easiest thing to get a horse used to. Begin bringing treat items to your horse in a basic plastic bag from the grocery store. Be sure to allow the bag to crackle normally as you unwrap the carrot or other food item while standing at your horse’s shoulder. Do nothing if your horse reacts to the noise, just unwrap and display the treat. When your horse’s natural curiosity allows him to look at and sniff the treat, reward him with it. He will soon begin associating the sound of the plastic bag with something good.
To accustom your horse to the movement of a plastic bag, tie it securely to a training stick, lunge whip, or crop. With the horse on a long lead line, approach the shoulder, and gently move the stick up and down a foot or two from his rib cage. The fluttering of the plastic bag will most likely cause your horse to step away; this is normal. Allow your horse to move around you, but continue to move the bag in the same manner, keeping the same rhythm. When your horse stops moving, stop moving the bag, step in and pet him. His reward for standing still (not reacting) is the removal of the irritation. Repeat on both sides of the horse equally, increasing the movement as he improves.
When used consistently, with patience, a plastic bag makes an inexpensive and effective training tool for your horse.

Often it's best to begin using positive association--such as bringing treats or feed to a horse in a plastic bag. Soon the horse learns that the bag means something positive and good. Once you've made that step you can slowly progress to more challenging exercises associated with plastic bags.
