If you're a couponer, you're always looking for ways to stretch every dollar you spend at the grocery store. Chances are you can stretch your dollar even furtherby doubling coupons. Doubling (and even tripling) coupons is a concept that many of us find attractive, but most of us don't know how it works.

Double Coupons Explained

Coupon doubling is a promotion given by a particular grocery store to its customers. The concept is that if you have a coupon for $1.00 off an item, the store doubles the coupon's value, and you save $2.00. The types of coupons generally eligible for doubling are manufacturer's coupons. However, read the fine print, as some manufacturer's coupons will have "do not double" printed on them.

Where to Redeem Double Coupons

You may be surprised to know that many stores will allow for coupon doubling. Some stores do not double coupons as a matter of policy. Check with the grocery stores in your area to find out if they double coupons and what limitations, if any, apply.

Always check with your local store for their coupon policy. Most national chains maintain the same policy, but some regional stores may be independently owned and therefore have a different policy per store.

When to Shop

Some stores double coupons every day. Some will have doubling or even tripling specials on a regular basis. Stay in the know by regularly perusing the store's weekly circular and get on their email list, for up to date information.

Rules for Doubling Coupons

Most stores have specific limitations in their coupon redemption policy:

• The number of coupons redeemed per visit, per transaction or per day This applies to all coupons, not only those that are doubled.
• The number of coupons per like item For example, you buy four boxes of Brand X cereal and present four 50-cent coupons for redemption. If the store's policy only allows three to be doubled, your fourth coupon will be redeemed at face value.
• The maximum value per coupon some stores will only double coupons under a certain amount.
• The maximum value doubled Stores usually have a maximum amount up to which they will double.
• Other rules may apply. Check with your store for details.

Big double and triple coupon events will generate a lot of shoppers. Stores will sometimes stock only a limited number of the special items. Get to the store early to increase your chances of getting what you want.

Stacking Coupons

Another way to double your savings (or almost) is by stacking coupons (presenting a manufacturer's coupon along with a store coupon for a single item). When you present both coupons at checkout, you get the value of both coupons taken off the price. Some won't allow this, but some do. Drug stores, like CVS, Rite-Aid and Walgreens seem to allow coupon stacking on a regular basis, but some grocery stores do too. When checking out, always hand the manufacturer's coupons to the cashier first, then the store coupons.
