How to Drink Responsibly?

Drunk Driving is one of the most selfish deeds anyone can partake in. Yes, there are many things one can do to take time and money away from other people – but to know that you could possibly take someone else’s life, and simply not care? That is ultimate. Every little seed of knowledge has a chance to grow into fruit in someone’s life, and it’s no different with knowing the truth about driving while intoxicated. Whether the drunk is yourself, a friend, a minor in your household – all demand responsibility, which may take tragedy to confront, but hopefully the branches of wisdom will be able to break down the stoic barrier to reason that selfishness has fortified. That being said, while abstinence is a sure fire way to prevent trouble in this case, especially for the weak of heart, drinking responsibly is the next best thing. First, be aware of the conditions in which you plan to partake of any alcoholic beverage. If you’re at a party, be aware that temptation to over indulge does arise. If you are at home, are you going to remain there all night? Are people going to be in attendance – people for whom you will be responsible? Again, wisdom can call out to you, but you must be willing to answer – willing to do that hard thing that goes against our foolish wills.

Then, if you do plan to drink outside of the home, we’ve heard it all before, but you can’t hear it too much – have a designated driver! Keep money for a cab! Anything besides thinking that you ought to be the one to drive home or to the next function – at the point of intoxication to where you can’t drive would be a great time to have someone drive you home, instead of to another bar or party. Also at this point is when reason is usually tucked neatly away behind some kind of selfish fulfillment. This also, is wisdom that may keep you sound at just the right time.

Finally, even if you are at home, there is a reasonable limit here, too! Alcohol can still have disastrous effects at home, whether it feeds simmering tempers, lays out a bed of temptation to indulge in unfaithfulness to a relationship, abuse of a loved one or another substance, is given to a minor who leaves in a car and wrecks, and the list can go on and on. Even these can lead to an arrest, but usually an arrest is not the biggest problem. In many cases, an arrest would be merciful – a hard bottom that forces one to examine where they gave the control of their lives over to a substance, or an unhealthy desire.

With all the dangers surrounding alcohol, it is some people’s opinion that one shouldn’t drink at all. This is not black and white, however. People all have different weaknesses, and the wise will take these into account and go another direction to head off loss of life in any form or fashion -even if it meant giving up a comfortable lifestyle. But most people are not willing to go through precautionary steps that will take away their only fulfillment in life, because they haven’t found the One, True Fulfillment – that Christ is more than enough for all you really need.
