Fortunately, there are some steps that customers can take to try to reach their destination as soon as possible.

First, try to plan your trip to take into account the possibility of flight cancellations. If possible, fly earlier in the day rather than later, and avoid the last flight of the day. This ensures that there is at least the possibility of making the next flight if yours is delayed. Next, make sure that you know what alternate flights are available in the event of a cancellation. This will help the airline personnel to reaccomodate you.

Once you have been informed of the cancellation, immediately attempt to be rescheduled. Use a cell phone to contact the airline if there is a long line at customer service. Alternatively, try to access the airline staff in the business lounge. Finally, keep in mind that airlines must refund your money if they are unable to get you to your destination the same day. If you are able to make alternate travel plans, or prefer not to travel, this may be your best option. For example, it might be easier to take a train or rent a car, if only to get to an alternate airport with an available flight.
