Even man’s best friend has been known to come down with a case of Allergies from time to time, and a canine allergies manifest themselves in much the same ways as human allergies. Symptoms can include sneezing and itchiness for airborne allergies, and vomiting and diarrhea when the allergy is to something in your pet’s food. Here are some ways to treat your dog and alleviate his or her symptoms if allergies do occur.

You will want to look for the telltale signs of allergies. Sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, and a runny nose are all signs of airborne allergies, as well as fleas, since fleas can carry dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. Your dog may lick his or her paws, and scratch, bite, or chew at certain areas of his or her skin, particularly around the tail and inside hind legs in an effort to relieve the itch. Vomiting, diarrhea, and gas or bloating are signs of food allergies. In any type of allergy, hives and rashes may occur.

Remember that flea season is summer in most of the United States, and that allergies from inhaled pollen and other particles generally occur in the spring. Also make a note of which foods your dog has been eating recently, since the majority of dog foods contain soybeans, wheat, and dairy, all of which can cause allergic reactions. If the veterinarian deems it necessary, your pet may also be put on antihistamines.

Take your dog to a veterinarian as soon as you witness any of these symptoms. Depending on the symptoms, you may want to speak to the veterinarian about eliminating foods with certain ingredients in them as a means of determining which of these foodstuffs is causing the allergic reaction, if you believe it is foodborne.

Make sure that you vacuum, dust, and clean the house thoroughly and on a regular basis if you and the veterinarian determine that the allergy is from airborne particles. A cool bath with oatmeal or aloe vera can do much to relieve your dog’s itching. Make sure that your dog stays clean and brushed or groomed for fleas, using special shampoos if deemed necessary.
