Windows has held the top spot in the operating system battle for quite some time. Ubuntu Linux is quickly gaining popularity among computer users due to the flexibility of the system. If you are a Windows user who would like to make the switch to an open source platform, you should consider Ubuntu. If you are unsure that you will like the new system or that you won’t be able to use your favorite Windows programs any longer, there is a way to install both operating systems on your hard drive. This process will be outlined in the following guide.

The first thing you must do is download the Ubuntu ISO file from the website. Once the file is downloaded, you will need to burn the ISO image onto a disc. There are many free image burning software packages available online. You will then need to reboot your computer from your newly burned installation disc. When the splash screen appears, select the "Install Ubuntu" option. Follow the instructions on the screen until you get to the partition manager. At this point, you may choose the default option, in which Ubuntu will automatically resize your Windows partition to free up enough space to install Ubuntu. If you would like to manually specify the size and location of the partition, you may do so. If you choose this option, remember to designate SWAP space as well. SWAP space is used when the system requires more memory than you have in RAM. When you are finished with partitioning, proceed with the installation process by following the instructions on the screen.

When the installation is finished, the computer will reboot and you will need to remove your installation disc. Before you see your desktop, GRUB bootloader will display. This menu displays for 10 seconds by default and allows you to choose which operating system you would like to use. Since Windows does not recognize Ubuntu, if you install Windows after Ubuntu you will need to boot from your Ubuntu installation disc and update GRUB in the terminal to be able to access both operating systems.

Can you install ubuntu and not enter my os?

Do you mean, install Ubuntu and not enter the BIOS? To install Ubuntu using a CD, you need to enter the BIOS, setting the CD drive as the first boot. Otherwise, the computer will still boot off the hard-drive and ignore Ubuntu on the CD drive. If you meant, install Ubuntu without removing your Windows operating system? Then you need to set up a dual-boot between Windows and Ubuntu. Search the internet for fuller instructions on creating a dual-boot. If you simply want to try using Ubuntu without making any changes to the OS already on the hard-drive, either use the CD containing Ubuntu as an ISO file, known as a Live CD. Or, look up WUBI on the internet. Wubi will allow you to download and use Ubuntu as you would any other Windows file - without making any changes to the hard-drive.

How do you dual boot Windows Vista and Ubuntu correctly?

Install Vista first. During the installation of OpenSUSE, you will be prompted if you would like to partition the hard drive to make room for OpenSUSE, or format the drive entirely for OpenSUSE. Make a partition of at least 6 GB, plus a swap partition of 1 GB. The installer will automatically install a bootloader known as GRUB, which can boot Vista or OpenSUSE at your choosing.

How do you install Windows XP over ubuntu?

If you have a lisenced installation disk you have two simple options: 1. Install it in a virtual machine through virtualbox. This makes it so you can (and must) run both systems at the same time, but switching is faster. 2. Back up ubuntu onto another storage device, such as a external hard drive. Then install windows, and make sure to wipe the system in the process. Then install ubuntu over windows, rewriting the mbr to use the GRUB bootloader. You can replace your files from the backup.

Can you reinstall windows7 after installing ubuntu?

Yes, Windows 7 will overwrite the partition used by Ubuntu. In dual-booting, were two operating systems share the hard-drive (in separate partitions), you have a choice of either OS on boot-up. The recommended method is to install Windows first, then Ubuntu. Otherwise, if Windows is installed second it greedily takes over automatically at boot-up.
