Windows has held the top spot in the operating system battle for quite some time. Ubuntu Linux is quickly gaining popularity among computer users due to the flexibility of the system. If you are a Windows user who would like to make the switch to an open source platform, you should consider Ubuntu. If you are unsure that you will like the new system or that you won’t be able to use your favorite Windows programs any longer, there is a way to install both operating systems on your hard drive. This process will be outlined in the following guide.
The first thing you must do is download the Ubuntu ISO file from the website. Once the file is downloaded, you will need to burn the ISO image onto a disc. There are many free image burning software packages available online. You will then need to reboot your computer from your newly burned installation disc. When the splash screen appears, select the "Install Ubuntu" option. Follow the instructions on the screen until you get to the partition manager. At this point, you may choose the default option, in which Ubuntu will automatically resize your Windows partition to free up enough space to install Ubuntu. If you would like to manually specify the size and location of the partition, you may do so. If you choose this option, remember to designate SWAP space as well. SWAP space is used when the system requires more memory than you have in RAM. When you are finished with partitioning, proceed with the installation process by following the instructions on the screen.
When the installation is finished, the computer will reboot and you will need to remove your installation disc. Before you see your desktop, GRUB bootloader will display. This menu displays for 10 seconds by default and allows you to choose which operating system you would like to use. Since Windows does not recognize Ubuntu, if you install Windows after Ubuntu you will need to boot from your Ubuntu installation disc and update GRUB in the terminal to be able to access both operating systems.

Or, look up WUBI on the internet. Wubi will allow you to download and use Ubuntu as you would any other Windows file - without making any changes to the hard-drive.

Yes you can, when the computer is booting up open the boot menu and choose the external as your boot device, i have a external hard drive with Ubuntu on it and do exactly that, I'm sure it can work with windows.
