Not everyone is crazy about new technology. How else can you explain the fact that you can still buy phonographs in electronics stores, years after their death was proclaimed across the land when digital came on the scene? The same holds true for people who just refuse to follow the advances of our age and embrace the latest methods to receive and record phone messages. They insist on using telephone/answering machine combos. If you are one of those people who won’t join the rest of us in the 21st century, we want you to know the time has come. Leave your telephone/answering machine combo behind. Here’s how.

Step One. Realize How Annoying Former Technologies can Be

Don’t you know that these units confuse those of us living in the voicemail world? We leave our message and then don’t know what to do. First, we push the pound button, then perhaps the star button, and then finally even 9 1 (because that is what voicemail recording technology instructs people who leave messages to do) and still fail to hear that familiar “Your message has been sent. Thank you.” We can only hang up and hope, as if we’d thrown a message in a bottle out to sea, that our message has gotten through. We also wonder, because we know that the telephone/answering machine combos allow you to screen calls, if you aren’t actually standing right by the phone and disregarding our plea for you to pick up. Caller ID is different, that’s just a number we see on an LCD screen. You are actually hearing our voice and deeming us unworthy of your interest.

Step Two. Decide to embrace technological advances

Voicemail has advantages over the telephone/answering machine combo, which is why most of us use it, and you should too. First of all, it always works. You don’t have to remember to turn voicemail on, or worry that a lightning storm can disable it, or miss a call because you are on the phone or on the internet and the combo can’t work if the line is engaged. Also, you might learn to love how easy it is to retrieve messages when you are away from home, skip through your messages or save and delete messages with a push of a button.

So take the leap. Toss the telephone/answering machine combo in the trash bin, and join the rest of us who have learned to trust and rely on voicemail. Got the message?
