What Students Need to Know Before Taking a GED Online Test

While many companies offer online tests, it is important to understand that you cannot earn your diploma by taking an online GED test. In the United States, the only diplomas recognized by accredited colleges and many employers are those issued through ACE. These diplomas must be earned by taking and passing a GED test at an official ACE-approved testing center. While some online high schools promise to send diplomas to students who complete their program, these diplomas will not be nearly as valuable as one backed by ACE. Still, online GED tests can be a valuable resource when preparing to take the official GED test.

What to Expect From a GED Online Test

Like the official GED test, online tests typically cover five different subjects: reading, writing, science, mathematics and social studies. The language arts section, which is composed of both reading and writing, will test your reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation and sentence structure. While most of this section is made up of multiple choice questions, you will be required to write an essay to pass the test.

The science portion of the test is composed of questions on life science, physical science and earth science. You will also be tested on history, economics, government and geography. The mathematics portion of the test focuses on algebra, geometry, statistics and number operations. Since these subjects are covered on the official test, most online tests also quiz students on these subjects.

For many students, online practice tests are a great way to study for the GED test. This will not only give you an idea of what is on the official test, but it will teach you how to effectively manage your time. Once you can consistently pass practice tests, you are probably ready to take the real thing and earn your high school diploma.
