Have you ever dug to the back of your freezer looking for the perfect steak to grill only to find it and discover that it is inedible due to freezer burn? This is an all too common problem that can be easily avoided with a few preventative measures. Protecting frozen foods from freezer burn is all about how you package it.

Vacuum Sealing - Buying in bulk is an economical way of reducing food costs but when you bring the food home it needs to be properly wrapped in order to protect the food from freezer burn. The best possible way to protect your foods is with a vacuum sealer. The heavy duty plastic bags and removal of any air followed by a tight, air proof seal is hands down the best way to protect frozen foods from getting freezer burn. The only draw back is that vacuum sealers can be pricey and the bags are not reusable, and they can be expensive as well. However, if you do most of your shopping in bulk this may be the best option.

Double Layers - So you’ve found an irresistible deal on steaks and buy enough for dinner and to freeze. You need to double wrap those steaks to ensure that once frozen they are protected from freezer burn. First tightly wrap the steaks in foil or plastic wrap and then seal them in a heavy duty zipper plastic bag removing as much air as possible. Place as many steaks in each plastic bag as will fit to ensure minimal space for air.

Ice Glazing - Glazing with ice is a little more tricky but well worth the effort. Take those steaks you just bought, if you place them in a single layer on a cookie sheet filled with enough water to just cover them and then partially freeze them you can break the steaks off like an ice cube then wrap them in plastic wrap and continue to fully freeze them. The layer of ice on the steaks will prevent any and all air from getting to the steaks thus causing freezer burn.

Of course the best possible way to prevent freezer burn of frozen foods is to use them in a timely manner!
