It’s nice once in a while to do something selfless for someone else, especially as there are so many worthwhile causes out there needing out help. But it’s hard to be a philanthropist. Raising money is hard. How do you raise the money if you can’t get people to listen? Well this article will tell you how to show a little philanthropy and raise lots of money for your chosen charity.

-Step 1: Choose your charity

The first step is to choose the charity you’d like to support. With so many worthy charities out there, this can be hard, but don’t be discouraged, choose something close to your heart.

-Step 2: Contact the charity

Tell them you are going to do some fundraising, and ask if they could send you something to help. They may send you stickers, or a collection box or leaflets, anything that can get people interested in what you are doing and verify that you really are fundraising.

-Step 3: Set a target

A target is a good idea, simply because you need to know where to aim. There is no point in simply saying you want to raise money with no idea how much is a) realistic and b) achievable. So, sit down and come up with a figure. It is ok to surpass it, or fall a little below it, but this is your roundabout figure.

-Step 4: Brainstorm

Get a pen and paper and start brainstorming ideas. Start with “raffle” or “tombola,” or “sponsored something.” When you are done with some generic ideas, mind map them to make them more specific. So, you have raffle. Raffle what? What could you raffle? Or what could you do that is sponsored? Where could you hold a tombola? What about a bake sale? Who will make the cakes? Where will you sell them?

-Step 5: Persuasion

People don’t like to part with their hard earned money, so you need something that they can’t resist. So set up a delicious bake sale, and have your form for the sponsored walk, swim, climb, fast, silence or whatever on the stall too. When people come to buy cakes (who can resist cake), you can ask them to sign the form too. Even if they only give a small amount, it all adds up. Also, put the charity donation box on the stall, and be bold “can I put the change in the charity box?” it sounds very rude, and most charities wouldn’t do it themselves, but even if 25 percent of people say yes, the extra money will pile up!

-Step 6: A gimmick

SHOW the people what the charity is about. If it is an animal charity, ask the charity if you can bring a dog from the charity kennels with you (a calm one) and have him with you in the store. People will come over to fuss him, and you explain you are fundraising for him and other animals. Not only will you make money, but you may even find the little guy a new home! If you are fundraising for starving children, don’t show pictures of starving children, or people may keep their distance. Get a bowl of rice, put it on your stall, with a glass of dirty water and explain this is how much a family lives on for a week, and this is what they have to drink. People will be interested, but not repelled.

-Step 7: Tell people your target

Put a big sign on your stall with your goal. Tell people as they come over what your target it, and how that will help the charity – what will they do with it? Tell everyone how much you have made so far and how much you need.

-Step 8: Try something different

Instead of going for all the usual fundraising ideas, try and come up with something different. Even ask local businesses for help. Will they donate something for the day – will they offer their services for free for charity? Even if you can’t get it for free, you could team up and all profits could go to the charity. So maybe charity boat rides, you pay for the boat, and everyone else pays for each ride – all profits go to charity.

-Step 9: Count all your money and send it to the charity

Well done! You’ve worked hard and now you can finally send your earnings to the charity of your choice. Your hard work has paid off.

Helping raise money can be very hard work, but as long as you are honest with your customers and aren’t afraid to ask for more, you will do great. Just remember, everyone feels good about helping a charity, they just need a reason to do it.
