Cushioned chairs may be more comfortable than hard ones at a dining table, but they can also become very dingy. Dropped food and constant use lead to stains and wear that can’t be easily cleaned up. Thankfully, it’s not too difficult to recover the cushions on your dining chairs and leave them looking like new.
Step 1: Measure the seats of your dining chairs. Add three inches to each side of these measurements to know how large you’ll need to cut squares of new fabric to cover the cushions. Use these measurements to decide how much fabric to buy.
Step 1: Choose new fabric for your dining chair cushions. Choose a sturdy, heavy-duty fabric. Upholstery fabric or indoor-outdoor fabric are good choices. Keep in mind that a busy pattern will hide stains better than a plain color.
Step 2: Treat the new fabric with a stain-resistant spray, such as Scotchgard. Follow package directions to ensure your chair cushions will look nice for as long as possible.
Step 3: Turn your dining chairs over and unscrew each seat from its base.
Step 4: Cut out squares from the new fabric using the measurements you obtained earlier. Use pinking shears to minimize later shredding of the edges.
Step 5: Lay a square of the new fabric wrong-side-up on the floor. Center a chair seat, also wrong-side-up, on the fabric. Pull one end of the fabric around to the back side of the seat. Use a staple gun to attach it to the seat.
Step 6: Pull the opposite end of the fabric around to the back side of the seat. Stretch it tight and staple it in place.
Step 7: On one of the remaining sides, fold the corners of loose fabric in toward the center. Then pull the fabric to the back and staple it in place. Repeat on the other side, making sure to pull the fabric tight.
Step 8: Trim any excess fabric as necessary, especially if it covers the screw holes. Make sure the fabric is pulled tight across the chair cushion and that it’s straight. Make any adjustments as necessary.
Step 9: Place the chair seat back onto the base and line up the screw holes. Reattach the seat to the base.
Step 10: Repeat for the remaining chairs.
