You have come to the realization that you need a new CD/DVD drive for your computer, but how do you know which one is right for you? Use the tips below to select the proper CD/DVD drive.
• Know what type of CD/DVD drive you want. If you go to the store with nothing in mind, you will be very overwhelmed with the options available. There are Blu-ray and standard CD/DVD drives available. If you are thinking about the Blu-ray option, make sure your video card is able to handle playing Blu-Ray discs and is also ready for HDCP.
• Decide whether or not you want an internal or external CD/DVD drive. Both are available, but internal drives are usually less costly. However, if you do not have space for an internal drive, your only option will be to choose an external drive.
• If you have selected an external drive, the next step is to decide whether you want a USB or an IEEE 1394. Make sure that you have the correct ports on your computer before selecting either one. While these two ports can look very similar, they are not interchangeable. Also, keep in mind when selecting a USB drive that some drives require two USB ports, one for power and one for data, so make sure you have enough.
• Finally, you will want to select a cache size that will be effective for you. The cache is what makes the drive faster, so the larger the cache size, the faster it will operate. Also know that with a larger cache size comes a larger price tag.
Although purchasing a new CD/DVD drive can be confusing to some, if you take it one step at a time and rule out the things you do and don’t want, you will undoubtedly have a better buying experience.
