Is Google Places right for you? Google Places is helpful for anywhere that has a physical location. It will not take the place of your website, but it does allow you to publish location specific information, as well as things like coupons that can help track your conversion rate.
Here are the steps to set up your Google Places listing:
1. Go to Google Sites
2. Click on "Create New Site". You can also choose your site name and theme at this location.
3. Once you have everything listed that you need, you can share it with the world.
As with all of your other listings, I have found it helpful to dedicate one hour each month (or more) to make sure you update and keep all of your "listing" sites fresh. I have an alert in my calendar to do this. A number of businesses have found running promotions and coupons directly from the Google Places account extremely successful.
It is also a great idea to request some of your current customers to go to your Google Places account and post reviews. You can do this through directly asking or in conjunction with a Facebook contest or similar promotion.
Most people when looking for a company or service will Google it first, so for that reason it is a great idea to get your listing front and center when people are searching.

On any of these services, if someone searches directly for your business name and city, your listing will most likely show up.

Yes, it is actually possible. There are two main ways for a competitor's ad or information to show up on your Google Places page: 1) At the right hand side under the map (AdWords ads) 2) At the "Related places" section at the bottom of the listing Both are based on algorithms and the competitor would have only indirect control over the placements.
