Severe cases of atopic eczema may require oral steroids such as prednisode. These help reduce inflammation and offer relief from symptoms. These medications can not be used for long periods of time due to serious side effects.

Lifestyle changes can also relieve symptoms and prevent new episodes. Avoid long, hot showers or baths. Excessive sweating, stress and rapid temperature changes can make symptoms worse. Artificial dyes and fragrances in soaps, lotions and perfume can also make symptoms worse.
