Dust, lint, and tangled threads can all affect the tension and mechanics of sewing machines. Well-cared for and well-maintained sewing machines can last a lifetime. Simple tasks, like cleaning out the lint and oiling the machine, can prevent visits to the sewing machine repair center.

The mechanical components of sewing machine are located in two parts, under the light cover and in the bobbin compartment, under the feed dog throat place. Unplug the sewing machine and remove the bobbin and shuttle assembly from the compartment. Next, remove the light cover. There is usually one or two screws that hold the cover on, after they are removed lift up the cover and pull it to the side. Manufacturers have various ways of snapping on the covers, some can be a little trickier than others. Once the light cover is off, use a screw driver to remove the throat plate. Due to the configuration of certain sewing machines, a short screw driver or a multi-tool screw driver might be useful. Lift off the throat plate and use a stiff brush to clean all of the dust from around the feed dog assembly and inside the bobbin compartment. It’s tempting to use a blower or compressed air, but these methods force dust further inside the machine. Sewing machine brushes can be purchased from craft stores or office supply stores offer keyboard brushes and keyboard vacuums that work well. Before reassembling the throat plate and shuttle race, add one or two drops of oil to the permanent assembly that rotates the bobbin.

Under the light cover, remove tangled threads wrapped around the tension discs and oil the mechanical parts. Most sewing machines have three parts that should be oiled, the cam, the elbow, and the presser bar. These parts are easy to see by manually turning the needle. The cam rotates in a circular motion to move the tread up-take hanger. The elbow works with the cam to the raise and lower the thread up-take. The presser bar is a large metal shaft that slides up and down when the needle is manually turned. These three points of contact should be oiled regularly.
