In this age of email and online petitions, politician figure if you are upset enough to hand-write a letter, you should be paid attention to. Think Mr. Spock
The most important point to remember is to take all emotion out of your letter. Pretend you are the always logical Mr. Spock from Star Trek. How would he write a letter to your local politician? He’d stick to facts and logical hypothesis based on past experience. If you do the same, then the politician and the politician’s staff will not have any reason to quickly toss your letter aside because you used insults or threats.
No Exclamation Points
Unless you are quoting text that includes one, leave out all exclamation points. They are the hallmark of an uneducated, over-emotional letter writer. A string of exclamation points at the end of a sentence is something a small child would do. Just by adding exclamation points, the politician will assume that you are too driven by emotions in order to reason with. Even if you are too driven by emotions in order to be reasoned with in person, you can at least fake it on paper.
Legibility
If your handwriting is poor, then please type your letters to politicians. They will not spend any time trying to decipher handwriting and quickly bin any unreadable letter. Typing or printing the letter out will make your letter much easier to read. Handwritten letters are effective if you are under 13 years old, but only if you write in large, neat print handwriting. Be sure to hand write your signature. That’s important and eye-catching. It puts a stamp of legal authority to the letter.
Format
At the top left hand corner, write your address. Slip a space. Below that, write the current date. Skip another space and write the politician’s address. Skip another space and then begin your letter. It’s good to use non-indented paragraphs and skip spaces between them. This format causes less eye strain.
