In 1937 the American Institute of Commerce (AIC) was founded. It was purchased in the late 1990s and the name was changed to Quest College. Kaplan, Inc. purchased the owning company in 2000 and changed the name once again to Kaplan College. The final name of Kaplan University was chosen later in 2004 to reflect the fact that the school offered Master’s degrees as of that time.

The university’s goals are to provide students with assistance in developing the attitudes of a professional and lifelong learner. All academic programs at Kaplan are assessed by faculty and staff to ensure quality and consistency to students seeking an education but without the time to obtain one in the traditional way.
