Kaplan University is a for-profit online college owned by The Washington Post Company. At Kaplan, students will have the flexibility to step outside the bounds of the traditional college system that does not work for so many and step into an education done their way. The university offers several online degrees and distance learning programs. It states that technological innovation is the cornerstone of the educational foundation which can be had at Kaplan.

In 1937 the American Institute of Commerce (AIC) was founded. It was purchased in the late 1990s and the name was changed to Quest College. Kaplan, Inc. purchased the owning company in 2000 and changed the name once again to Kaplan College. The final name of Kaplan University was chosen later in 2004 to reflect the fact that the school offered Master’s degrees as of that time.

The university’s goals are to provide students with assistance in developing the attitudes of a professional and lifelong learner. All academic programs at Kaplan are assessed by faculty and staff to ensure quality and consistency to students seeking an education but without the time to obtain one in the traditional way. While most of its 66,000 students are online attendees, there are a few college campuses spread throughout Iowa, Maryland, and Nebraska as well as academic assistance centers in Florida, Arizona, and Illinois.

The online instructors of Kaplan University are held to strict regulations to ensure that students receive the same benefits and quality that on-site students would. Supervised discussions are used weekly in every course and audio-enabled seminars are held weekly (though these are not mandatory). Professors must maintain at least two office hours each week for students who have questions or concerns. Weekly assignments are given as a means of taking attendance in each course. Much information is available in the form of videos, notes, and guides for students in each class to download and use as supplements.
