The field of architecture often encompasses various branches which involve designing the structural and landscape aspects of a project. Landscape architects are in charge of planning out the surroundings of a building or home. This specialty of architecture requires individuals that are artistic but also have the technical understanding behind the concepts of building something.
When it comes to education, the requirements for a landscape architect are very similar to those of a traditional architect. General courses in mathematics, science, computers, and art have to be taken. For example, several levels of calculus are required as well as physics, chemistry, and Biology. Landscape architects must also take courses in geography, geology, surveying and topography because these subjects teach students about the natural environment. A large portion of a landscape architecture program will focus on the use of Computer Aided Design, also known as CAD. This is a type of software that is use to create blueprints and realistic rendering of projects in 2D and 3D views.
Since landscape architecture is focused on a property rather than the actual building, professionals in this field need to know about a diverse array of plants. This means that a landscape architect has to learn about the different species of trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers which are used to beautify and complement a plot of land. This is where knowledge about the soil, climate and environmental conditions of a project becomes important. A landscape architect must determine whether a piece of land will be able to sustain the plantings. Landscape architecture also involves using rocks and Natural Resources to decorate a property. Additionally, the use of fountains, ponds, statues and small structures such as bridges are also often implemented into landscape design.
The career opportunities for landscape architects are mostly available in private construction projects and public beautification projects. For example, cities and towns need to hire landscape architects to plan out a public square or park. For private construction sites, landscape architects may create plans for a planned community. However, the typical home construction project does not require a landscape design because most new residential homes use natural grass and trees that are already standing on the property.
As an art form, landscape architecture can be traced back to the ancient world.
The Indian style of landscape architecture is Garden Art. The central feature of pre-colonial Indian landscape design was its complementary relationship with nature and experimental aesthetics.
