It’s spring! And for the majority of you homeowners out there, that means it’s time to get the yard into shape. Perhaps the most important step when beginning your seasonal yard work is dealing with the largest, most visible feature of your property: The lawn. Fertilizing your lawn will not only green and thicken your yard, but also protect it against common pests like grubs and weeds. The following seven steps will get you from an embarrassing ’winter thaw’ lawn, to a vibrant trophy lawn.

step one: Timing! - Fertilizing your lawn is important, but fertilizing at the wrong time can be almost as useless as not fertilizing at all. Wait for your lawn to de-thaw before spreading your fertilizer. This generally takes a few weeks of early-spring weather, and will generally grow enough to require a mow or two.

Step two: Choosing! - Now it’s time to select a fertilizer. Look for brands of fertilizer that fit your lawns needs. On the side of the bag should be a list of types of grass the fertilizer is good for (Bluegrass and Zoysia are two of the most common) and check to see how often it should be applied.

step three: For the young lawn - A young lawn of two years or less will appreciate a formula designed for it. Theses formulas will be obvious, as the bag will read ’new lawn’ or ’starter formula’ on the side. These formulas have strong thickening properties essential to the development of new lawns.

step four: For the old lawn - Select slow-release, granular complete fertilizers for lawns of more than 2 years. These formulas come packed with nutrients that will deliver steady growth throughout the season. Avoid fertilizers that use only one ingredient, like nitrogen or potassium.

step five: Spread! - Buy or borrow a spreader. Calibrate the spreader to a setting conducive to your fertilizer’s needs, and ’mow your lawn’ with it. Cover the lawn once, walking at a steady pace, in a way that will provide even coverage.

step six: water-soluble fertilizer - These brands don’t last long, so repeat as directed by the label. Use these with caution, and spread them evenly to avoid over-feeding.

step seven: Repeat at least twice per season! Not only do you want to get your lawn in good shape, but you want it to stay that way. Be sure to double check your bag to ensure that your lawn is getting the correct amount of fertilization each year.

A thick, green lawn is no accident. It takes sunshine and water and a plan. Feed your lawn regularly to keep it lush and full. Follow these easy fertilizing steps and you’ll enjoy your lawn the entire summer.

1. Pick your weapon. You’ll need a spreader to get the fertilizer onto the lawn. There are two kinds, rotary and drop. If you have a large lawn, a rotary spreader is probably the best choice since its disbursement cast is wider than a drop spreader’s. A drop spreader does better on smaller lawns where you need to negotiate gardens, bushes and trees.

2. Pick your fertilizer. Your lawn has different needs depending on the time of year. In early spring, you’ll want to use a pre-emergent that will kill weeds and feed the lawn. Apply before the temperature gets above 65 degrees regularly. In late spring, a slow-release nitrogen with weed control is best. Apply this when you see weeds popping up.

From then on, fertilize near the three summer holidays, Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. Use a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer. In fall, apply an herbicide and a winterizer to strengthen the roots.

3. Check your spreader. If you’re using a dropper, make sure it opens smoothly and closes correctly. Load your spreader when it is in the closed position. Walk it to the lawn and open it to begin distributing the fertilizer. Walk evenly and don’t overlap your swath. Close the feed before turning around at the end of each row so you don’t get an accumulation there.

Try to apply the fertilizer when the grass is damp, such as early in the morning or at dusk. Don’t mow your lawn for 48 hours afterward. You want the fertilizer to cling. Don’t fertilize if rain is forecast soon thereafter.

4. Rinse your spreader but not over the lawn. You can cause a fertilizer burn if you do.

It’s easy to keep your lawn happy when you conspire with Mother Nature. She’s the best friend a home owner can have.

How To Pick the Right Lawn Fertilizer?

Like decorative plants and flowers, grassy lawns need proper care to ensure healthy growth. A fit lawn will have a vibrant green color and be able to grow back following a mowing. The proper fertilizer can keep lawns full of important nutrients. Lawn fertilizer should be selected for its intended turf grass, the water solubility, and the homeowner’s schedule. Lawn fertilizer is often optimized for specific types of lawns. Popular grass types can include Kentucky blue or Bermuda. Picking a lawn fertilizer designed for a different type of grass can lead to inconsistent growth or wasted fertilizer. Starter fertilizer should be considered for lawns less than two years old. It is designed to thicken young grass for a healthy carpet of a lawn. Older lawns have fertilizer designed to maintain their health. Fertilizers with only one main ingredient should generally be avoided unless a soil test has been completed and indicates a need for that type of fertilizer. Fertilizer can come in water soluble or water insoluble types. Water soluble fertilizer is absorbed quickly, but must be reapplied often. It may cause some disruption to organisms living on the grass by temporarily acidifying the soil. Water insoluble fertilizer distributes nutrients slowly and consistently. It is generally considered to be gentler on a lawn. Whatever fertilizer is chosen, homeowners should consider how often they need to spread it and how they choose to do so. A fertilizer will not help a lawn’s growth if it is used inconsistently or spread across only part of the lawn. Picking the proper time during the year to apply fertilizer is also important. For busy homeowners, selecting a easily-spread fertilizer can save time. Watering and raking the lawn after fertilization may also be required depending on the fertilizer. Homeowners should select a fertilizer which can be completely spread according to their schedule. By choosing the right lawn fertilizer, a homeowner can enjoy the feel of healthy green grass beneath their feet. A vivid lawn enhances home values and provides children with an area to play. Selecting the correct lawn fertilizer may be difficult, but it can help achieve an excellent outdoors appearance for the home.
