OSX Leopard History

OSX Leopard (version 10.5) is a Macintosh operating system released by Apple Inc. on October26, 2007. The UNIX based, graphic user interface operating system is based on Steve Job’s NeXT operating system and Princeton University’s UNIX MACH Kernel. It was first released in 2002 and is the successor to Macintosh OS9.

OSX Leopard has extensively redefined the desktop in this version with a semitransparent menu bar and a redesigned Dock and Stack. Cover Flow, the visual navigation interface first introduced in iTunes has been included. It allows the user to flip through preview icons of documents, bookmarks and graphics. Also included is 64 bit application support, Time Machine automatic backup utility and updated search functions for Spotlight, which allows searches across any number of computers.

OSX Leopard Tips and Tricks

“Spaces” – This is a very useful application that allows the user to create numerous virtual screen spaces. Each space can contain any group of windows. This allows very quick navigation between groups of windows and reduced window minimization.

To setup Spaces, open System Preferences and click on Expose and Spaces. Selecting the Spaces tab will open a virtual screen spaces creation window. A checkbox allows the placement of a menu icon indicating the current space selected. In the middle section, applications may be added and assigned to one or all spaces. Also included is a Spaces window activation key. Selecting the Spaces activation key from the desktop (default is F8) displays the created spaces and their corresponding assigned windows. Modification of window assignments are available at this point via drag and drop.

Animated Minimize Button – This is a simple trick to slow down the minimize window animation. Hold down the shift key and click the window’s minimize button. The window animation slowly drains into the dock. Subsequent window selections will add a fill up icon animation in the dock.

Macintosh Disk Utility Malfunction – Problems on a disk drive utilizing the internal bus may not be discovered using Apple’s Disk Utility and using a third party disk utility is recommended.

These three tips and tricks are only the tip of the OSX Leopard iceberg.
