Dialysis-associated peritonitis is inflammation of the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum) that occurs in someone who receives peritoneal dialysis.
Alternative NamesDialysis-associated peritonitis
Causes, incidence, and risk factorsDialysis-associated peritonitis may be caused by bacteria that get into the area during the dialysis procedure. Skin bacteria or fungi can cause the infection.
SymptomsOther symptoms that can occur with this disease:
Signs and testsThe doctor will do a physical examination and may find that your abdomen is tender when touched. There may be some discharge from the site where the catheter used for dialysis enters the skin. Dialysis fluid may be cloudy.
Tests that can show infection include:
The goal of treatment is to cure the infection. Antibiotics are given into a vein (intravenous injection) or into the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum).
Laboratory tests that show which bacteria or fungi are causing the infection will determine the type of antibiotic used.
Expectations (prognosis)Most patients recover.
ComplicationsYou may need to have the dialysis catheter removed.
Calling your health care providerCall your health care provider if you receive peritoneal dialysis treatments and develop symptoms of peritonitis.
PreventionCareful sterile technique when performing peritoneal dialysis may help reduce the risk of inadvertently introducing bacteria during the procedure. Some cases are not preventable. Equipment design improvements have made these infections less common.

Many of the risks and side effects associated with dialysis are a combined result of both the treatment and the poor physical condition of the ESRD patient. Dialysis patients should always report side effects
Tuberculosis peritonitis causes ascites.
Tuberculosis peritonitis causes ascites.
In the thyoglycollate model of peritonitis, researchers inject thyoglycollate broth into the peritoneal cavities of laboratory animals to induce peritonitis. Then they test their materials to see if they are effective in curing peritonitis.
You get peritonitis, once the appendix get burst.
Peritonitis is an inflammation of the peritoneum. The main manifestations of peritonitis are acute abdominal pain, abdominal tenderness, and abdominal guarding.
Increasing rigidity and tenderness indicates an increased likelihood of perforation and peritonitis.
Home Dialysis Central would be an obvious choice but you can always try out the National Kidney Foundation. They have great staff to help you find the job that is right for you.
Dialysis is.
Unless there is bowel obstruction, along with the peritonitis, bowel sounds can still be present.
