Now that Summer is fully upon us, many of those with and without central air conditioning are starting to feel the heat. If you are considering cranking that system to arctic weather, however, you'll likely want to keep your electric bill in check as well. Wheter you are using window units or, like many new consumers, opt for a central air conditioning system, here are some tips to help you reduce your energy bill.

Central Air

While central air conditioning systems have some distinct advantages in terms of efficiency, you are also constantly cooling your entire house rather than designated areas. As a result, your best bet is to load up with an adjustable thermostat and place it on a timer that raises the temperature while you are out of the house and lowers it about an hour before you get home. Be sure to check your ducts for leaks and, if necessary, hire a professional to patch them up.

Window Units

Window units tend to be a more of a hassle and less efficient than it's central counterpart, but that's no reason to have higher energy bills. Be sure to keep the air filters on your units clean each year, which will help increase the unit's longetivity while also keeping the efficiency at its best. If possible, place the unit in an area that's shaded to prevent your unit from doing more work than it needs to. In addition, place your units on a timer depending on what time of day you will be in the home.

Dealing with higher energy bills is never fun, but there are always steps you can take to lower them. Many utility companies run free or discounted energy audits to help keep your bills in check, so contact your local utility firm if you are interested in additional ways to save.

How to Save Money on Central Heating Costs?

Due to the rising costs of oil, most people are struggling to deal with their rising heating and cooling prices. While central heating prices are much higher than they have been in the past, there are plenty of ways to reduce your central heating costs. One of the best ways to reduce your central heating costs would be to get a new furnace. Old furnaces tend to have much lower efficiency than a new one does. Because of this, if you switch to a new furnace, your furnace will need to work much less to keep your home warm. This will then reduce your central heating costs.
