If you are going to be playing in a check-free roller hockey league, you could probably get by with a lighter pair which are beneficial for quick skating.

In almost all leagues a hockey player will also need to have helmet, which will protect your skull from collisions, puck or ball deflections, and inadvertent falls. Depending on the style of the sport you are playing, you may need to purchase a helmet which comes with a built-in mask, which provide further protection.
