In the 1980s Royal began manufacturing and successfully selling its Dirt Devil model vacuum cleaners. The company itself originated in Cleveland Ohio but is now owned by TTI Floor Care North America, a Hong Kong based firm. TTI also makes Hoover, Vax, and other vacuum cleaners.

In 1984, Royal began marketing the Dirt Devil Hand Vac. At 25 million sales, it subsequently became the largest selling hand held vacuum in America. The incredible success of the Hand Vac encouraged Dirt Devil to explore avenues for more product innovations.

In 2005, Dirt Devil revamped their hand vac and renamed it the Dirt Devil Classic Hand Vac. They gave it twice as much power and included a HEPA filter and dirt cup that required no bag. That model is still available in many retailers and online.

Today, Dirt Devil sells many different models of hand held vacuums, stick vacuums, canister vacuums, steam cleaners, and carpet cleaners as well as standard uprights. Dirt Devil online also has all accessories and parts.
