The oldest city in the Western Hemisphere is Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominica Republic. The city is located in the southern region of the Dominican Republic’s coastline and it offers a wonderful blend of the old and modern worlds in a package. The Zona Colonia is the historical neighborhood and a picture of colonial architectural buildings similar to those in the 15th and 16th centuries and is one of the main attractions in Santo Domingo. Visitors to Santo Domingo will find it easy to get around to the many attractions, shopping and entertainment facilities since they are located close by in the Distrito Nacional area.

Located at the Plaza de la Cultura, you will find many of the museums and galleries. These include the Gallery of Modern Art, the National Museums of Natural History and the National Museum of History and Geography. There is also the Museo Bellapart, which is located in the Naco area where you will find a great collection of privately owned contemporary art on display.

Visiting the Plaza de la Cultura, which houses the National Theatre and the Casa de Francia, is recommended for family-friendly entertainment such as concerts, dance performance and cultural events. One of the interesting and popular attractions is the “Los Tres Ojos de Agua’ or the Three Eyes of Water, which are beautiful caves and there is also the National Aquarium and the historical Columbus Lighthouse.

Dance and music is the heartbeat of entertainment in Santo Domingo and the Dominican Republic. This includes dances such as the merengue, salsa and perico. For nighttime entertainment, you should visit the Malecon, Santo Domingo where you will find varying activities and attractions along the beautiful seaside boulevard. Other exciting and fun attractions include going to the discos or to the hotel and casino facilities on the waterfront.

The food and drinks in Santo Domingo is influenced by the Spanish customs as well as locally produced items. Sampling the national dish, called “la bandera’ or the flag, is recommended. It includes white rice and red beans served with stewed meat, a vegetable salad and fried plantains. Other national meals include baked vegetable cake and soup with meat and vegetables and there are also international cuisines available.
