There is, perhaps, no better field to enter today than nursing.

First and foremost there is the satisfaction of helping others. In addition to that, nursing is one of the most sought-ever professions in all of healthcare.

Figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the nursing force in the country is expected to grow by 22 percent in the 10-year period ending in 2018. For example, there were slightly more than 2.6 million registered nurses in 2008, according to BLS statistics. That is expected to increase to 3.2 million by 2018, due to strong demand. A profession with normal growth projections would expect to increase by eight percent in the same period, according to the BLS.

The outlook is not surprising, given the current nursing shortage in the country. The main factor at play is the arrival of the first Baby Boomers into retirement.

When World War II ended, the country experienced a huge boost in population as soldiers returned home and made babies in record numbers. The first of these Baby Boomers turned 65 on the first day of 2011. According to the U.S. Census, about 3.65 million people will turn 65 in 2011. That trend will continue for the next 19 years, adding a total of about 73 million retirees during that period.

The aging of the country's population over the next two decades means two things for the nursing profession. First, a record number of nurses will retire beginning in 2011 and for the next two decades. Second, an aging population will put a strain on the healthcare system, helping to create more demand for nurses.

President Obama also has contributed to the demand for nurses.

The Affordable Care Act, signed into law in 2010, is expected to make insurance available to 32 million people who were previously uninsured. This huge pool of additional patients will require plenty of nurses, doctors and other medical professionals to handle the demand for health care.

In order to become a registered nurse and earn an average salary of more than $62,000, according to the BLS, there are three main educational paths.

A bachelor's degree in nursing is offered by most four-year colleges and universities. An associate degree in nursing is offered by many community and junior colleges and takes about two to three to finish. Finally, some hospitals offer diploma programs that last three years.
