Located in a picturesque valley, Stowe is a small town in northern Vermont with less than five thousand inhabitants. Tourism is far and away the biggest industry in Stowe. During wintertime, Stowe is a very popular destination for skiers and other winter sport enthusiasts due to its proximity to Stowe Mountain resort, a skiing resort. Local mountains also offer miles of hiking paths for cross country skiing or snowshoeing in the winter and hiking in the summer. In addition to its wide variety of outdoor activities, the town of Stowe offers a vibrant nightlife and many shopping and dining locations.
Arts and EntertainmentThe most popular form of entertainment in Stowe is skiing. In fact, skiing at Stowe is so popular that the town has been called The Ski Capital of the East. The nearby Stowe Mountain resort is renowned for its huge amount of runs - 116 in all - and difficult double black diamond runs. Made up of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak, the resort boasts a massive vertical drop of 2160 feet. In fact, Mount Mansfield is the highest mountain in the United States. To service its large number of trails, the resort has built the most mile long chair lifts of any ski resort in the East. In total, the resort encompasses thirty-nine miles of ski-able terrain.
In order to offer a place to stay for every one of the tens of thousands of tourists who visit each year, Stowe has built dozens of hotels. The Trapp Family Lodge, owned by the Trapp family on whom the film The Sound of Music is based, is the most famous of these.
Food and DrinkAlthough Stowe itself is a small town, its restaurants and bars are well known among travelers. There are dozens of restaurants in town, offering such varied cuisine as American, Italian, Mexican, and German. A number of bars have also been built within the town.
