Putting As Seen on TV's Shake Weight to the Test

Like the Thighmaster and Quick Gym before it the Shake Weight continues the long, dubious tradition of the miracle fitness infomercial. The ads for Shake Weight promise "firm, fabulous arms and shoulders in just six minutes a day!" As outlandish as this claim may appear, the ridiculous act of vigorously shaking a 2.5lb weight might be more absurd. Yet in the name of science, the question remains; will the Shake Weight deliver on this guarantee and silence the skeptics?

The Shake Weight operates on a principle of internal resistance which creates a "wave of muscle energy in your arms, shoulders, and chest". While this may be true, the same can be said of lifting dumbbells over a period of six minutes a day with varied exercises.

What exactly is fun about the Shake Weight? The act of monotonously jacking the Accordion weight up and down seems particularly boring. The accompanying sound while shaking is just a tier below metal on metal on the ear annoyance register. As a matter of fact, if you were to lift anything of substantial weight repeatedly you would surely see some muscle definition. Like a pineapple, which wouldn't cost $19.95 plus shipping and handling

The Shake Weight is little more than a fad, albeit a particularly ridiculous one. Traditional exercises with or without weights will most certainly provide similar results and save money in the process. Gag gifts never go out of style though, so that's one role that the Shake Weight can fill.
