A fire department, otherwise known as a fire brigade, is an organization that may either be privately or publicly funded, and its purpose is to offer protection from fire within a certain jurisdiction. Usually, this jurisdiction is a county, municipality or a certain district of fire protection. Each fire department is typically known for containing multiple stations within its boundaries. There are many fire departments within the United States, and this article showcases the five largest ones.

1. Chicago Fire Department. Under the jurisdiction of Chicago, Illinois’ mayor, the Chicago Fire Department is the largest of its kind in the Midwest, and it is the fifth largest of the whole nation. Currently led by mayor-appointed Commissioner John Brooks, the Chicago Fire Department is known as being one of the oldest departments in the entire nation. It is also known for its staff doubling as paramedics with the Emergency Medical System of Chicago.
2. Los Angeles Fire Department. Not to be confused with its County counterpart, the Los Angeles Fire Department is the fourth largest standing department in the United States with its 114 different stations scattered throughout all of Los Angeles. It also deploys five different fireboats for dockside structures under the Port of Los Angeles.
3. Los Angeles County Fire Department. Unlike the previous department, the Los Angeles County Fire Department caters to various otherwise incorporated parts of the County of Los Angeles, including 58 other towns and cities who prefer the county offer protection rather than the aforementioned department. The headquarters is based in Commerce and is under the command of Chief P. Michael Freeman.
4. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. As the name suggests, the second largest fire department in the whole of the United States serves not only the full state of California, but it also caters to otherwise vulnerable forests. If left alone, forest fires could have a devastating effect on the state, as well as the country.
5. New York Fire Department. Headquartered in downtown Brooklyn, the New York Fire Department is responsible for taking care of all five boroughs of New York. Approximately 11,600 officers are uniformed for duty, and it was this department who survived and helped through the attacks of September 11, 2001.
