You know you're ready to get a pet when you fully understand that you can handle the responsibility of ALMOST raising a child. This means waking up early to take the pet out if needed and to feed them spend time with them etc If your job prohibits these things then you probably are not ready for a pet. It certainly helps if you have some help around the house!

Considering A Pet For Your Child

Many children reach a point in which they become fixated on the idea of having their very own pet. As it is difficult to say no, you should consider many aspects before you give a definite yes.

Ready For Responsibility

As convincing as your child may be about becoming a great pet owner, he or she may not be responsibly ready. Consider your child’s age and personality. Does your child show signs of strong responsibility in all areas of their life? Have you considered your child’s commitment to additional activities such as hobbies and sports? If you find that your child is constantly changing direction in their interests, they may do the same with a pet.

Another important aspect to consider is your child’s demeanor. Are they calm and even tempered, or does your child have more of an aggressive personality? If the latter quality sounds familiar, your child may not be able to handle the responsibilities that come along with caring for some kinds of pets.

Pros Of Pets

A great benefit of children caring for pets is the strong bond that develops between a growing child and an animal. Children benefit from the unconditional love their pets have for them.

When children experience difficult times, pets help them cope by being there to play and comfort them in their time of need.

A Good Match

Research is essential for finding a pet that suits your child. A goldfish is a popular choice, especially for young children. Owning a goldfish will teach your child the basics of responsibility, as caring for a goldfish requires minimal time and effort. Small furry friends, such as hamsters, fancy mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits are also wonderful pets that require little time.

If your child is interested in having one of these creatures, make sure to research how the animal should be handled and their personality traits. Cats and dogs are typically the favorite household pets; however, they require an extensive amount of time and effort. Choosing a cat or dog would be a good decision only if the whole family is committed to its care.

Child’s Best Friend

If your family opts for a dog, there are many breeds that have a kid-friendly reputation. Examples include Labrador and Golden Retrievers, Beagles, and Cocker Spaniels. Research breeds of interest to learn about their temperament before making your final decision.

Familiarize Your Child With Animals

After deciding your child is ready and determining what type of pet you are going to bring into your home, you must familiarize your child with the animal and teach them about care. If it can be arranged, allow your child to interact with the kind of pet they will be adopting. Do research on caring for the animal, and explain the process to your child. Help them to understand that they will be caring for a living, breathing animal that deserves respect, care, and attention.
