How often do you think that teachers should communicate with parents? This is a good question given the fact that many classrooms are becoming more crowded and teachers are working with at least 25 plus learners. Despite this reality, teachers should still have a system in place to ensure that parents are regularly updated regarding their child. There are three reasons that teachers should consider when making the decision on how often they communicate with parents. These three reasons include the following:
Keeping Parents Updated about Behavior
The first reason why it is important to communicate with parents regularly is to keep them updated about their child’s behavior. Depending on the learners’ age, this can be done through a communications folder or a student agenda planner. That way, the parent can check for any additional commentary from the teacher regarding their child because parents rely on the teacher’s insights to see if any behaviors are also evident at home as well.
Keeping Parents Updated about Assignments
The second reason why it is important to communicate with parents on a consistent basis is for assignments, especially with homework. Even learners at the elementary level are able to find clever ways to forget about homework so it is important to let parents know what is expected each week of their child. This type of communication can be done via a classroom website, newsletter, or even a weekly email.
Building a Relationship with Parents
The last reason why teachers should communicate with parents regularly is to build that parent-teacher relationship. It is important to realize that the first line of communication with the school is with the teacher. Therefore, the teacher has the responsibility to set a good example of how the school works with families so that parents can come into the school and participate. At every level, parental participation is pivotal to a child’s success in school whether it be directly or indirectly.
The bottom line is that parents are concerned about their child and wish to hear back from the teacher. By communicating regularly with parents, this shows that both the teacher and the school is working towards building a positive collaboration with parents and their relationship can be truly seen as a partnership towards their child’s success.
