Every elementary teacher knows the value of having a classroom library. Just like with any of type of classroom project, there is a need to have helped manage it. The first reason is to track the book inventory. If there is a great deal of books in the classroom library, then it is necessary to perform inventory each week. This can easily be done if the library aide is able to ensure that each classmate write down the correct book that he or she is checking out and provide a written signature to be held responsible for that particular book. After this weekly book inventory has been performed, then the library aide will provide this information to the classroom librarian to make further decisions with the teacher.

Marketing the Classroom Library

The second reason why a classroom librarian is important is because of the need to market the classroom library. The classroom librarian has the knowledge about all of the books that are located in the classroom library. This comes in handy because he or she is able to share the book titles with their classmates, especially if they find out that their classmates are interested in a certain book or book series. Most teachers participate in the book reading book order club so that students have the opportunity to order books to have at their home. Equally important, teachers earn free books for their classroom library. Typically, they order books that their classroom has demonstrated interest when each student completed an interest survey at the beginning of the school year.

Providing Leadership Opportunities

The last reason why a classroom librarian is important is because of the leadership opportunity that is available for students. Depending on the classroom library inventory, it may be necessary to hire additional classmates to help the classroom librarian out. These students will serve as the classroom library aides who will have a specific set of responsibilities to ensure that each classmate has a great experience when visiting the classroom library. Classroom librarians are able to work on their leadership opportunities and learn how to build a working relationship with their peers.
