In August 1940 it was annexed by the Soviet Union. It was conquered and occupied by Nazi Germany in 1941. In 1944, it was reconquered by Soviet troops.

The Soviets had the political leadership and the intelligentsia of Estonia murdered or deported; under the the German occupation, some 90,000 Estonians were killed, including most of its Jewish citizens.

35,000 Estonians were drafted into the Russian army at the beginning of the German invasion, of which around 20,000 did not survive the war. Many other Estonians joined the German army in fighting the Soviets or joined the Finnish army for the same purpose.
