The football pools are a type of gambling akin to a lottery, however the gambler would be trying to guess the scores of football games instead of random numbers. Like a lottery various amounts of money could be won, even as much as a £million when the pool was run by a large company, such as Vernons. If you think of all the people entering the National Lottery as pooling their money together to make large prizes, you get the picture. Similarly many people pooled their money together and did the football pools every week.
An investment club is when a group of retail investors pool their money together and make decisions. If you have the money and are willing to take the risk, then you may want to join the club.

It depends on the circumstance. A pool is better if you are farther away from the lake, and have enough space and money to install a pool at your house. It is also good if you like to swim alone, and not with other people. A lake is better if you are really close to a lake and do not mind swimming with other people.
"Pool" without the article is a game played on a table with pockets in the corners. The player strikes a white ball with a long stick or cue, and the white ball strikes another ball or balls with the aim of causing the right ball or balls to go into one of the pockets."A pool", with the article, is a small body of standing water, natural or artificial. A pool artificially created to swim in is a swimming pool. The verb "to pool" means to pour together, as in the phrase "to pool your resources." When a group of people put their resources together the result is called a pool. For example if a group of people put their automotive resources together so that a different person every day drives the whole group, it is called a "car pool". Gambling games in which everyone adds to a pot which is then won by one of the contributors are also often called pools.
You really can't make money with a pool table, but by having your own pool table you can practice often enough to make money playing pool elsewhere. You can host a small pool tournament if you have your own table, and if you are good enough to be the winner, you will win money. However, hosting a small one table tournament is nearly always a loss to the host. If there are not many other good locations nearby, it is possible to have a "house fee" which can turn it from a loss to a profit for hte host.
