They are two completely different types of programs. MS Excel is a spreadsheet, while MS Word is a word processor. For example, it is not possible to create a pivot chart in MS Word that automatically updated every time you change a value in a related cell. It is not possible to click a button to "select all" in MS Excel.

All standard features are in both products. There are far too many to list. Standard things such as mail merge, spell checkers, tables, styles, themes, protection, collaboration and many, many other things are in both. MS Word 2007 just looks very different because of menus being got rid of and being replaced with the ribbon. Most of the things they do are the same, with all standard features being there. Some of them are enhanced in 2007 and some new things are there, but the two versions of Word are not radically different when it comes to the fundamentals, apart from the look.

Assuming you mean to type the √ symbol, I would guess (not using MS Word but OpenOffice.Org) that it is inserted as a "special symbol" (in one of the menus) which could allow access to all characters in the current font.
