If you used a tax professional or an online efile service, contact them to see if they can provide copies. Otherwise, see the instructions for Form 4506 to request a copy from the IRS: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf Requesting a complete copy of your tax return is expensive. For many purposes, an account transcript will provide all the information you need for free. See the instructions for Form 4506-T: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506t.pdf If you also need copies of your state returns, you'll have to contact your state's tax department.
You can get a copy of previous tax returns (IRS calls these transcripts) from IRS by calling 1-800-829-1040, or order by mail using IRS Form 4506T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return). There is no fee for transcripts. It takes two weeks for delivery.
You "file" your tax returns with the taxing authority (federal government, etc.) You can also "efile" your tax returns by submitting them electronically.
