Eastern Asset Management (in New York state) is a collection agency. They are what is known as scavenger debt collectors or "junk debt" buyers. They buy old debt for pennies on the dollar, most of which is uncollectible or out of statute (too old by law to collect on). This is what I have found after hours of research on the internet.

I myself was contacted by them in late 11/2008 and threatened with being sued about a debt I had paid off two years ago. she said she needed proof it was paid. I faxed a cease and desist letter and called the FTC. The nice lady at the FTC said they should have to prove I owed the debt, not the other way around, I should not have to prove anything. I sent them via certified mail a copy of the "settlement offer" they e-mailed me, and a copy of the "release of obligation/paid in full" letter from the other previous collection agency. Of course I didn't get a return receipt, meaning they refused to receive/sign it and can pretend they didn't receive it. Too bad the USPS keeps records of all certified mail.

They threaten to sue lots of time to scare people into paying them money they might not even owe.

Best of luck to whoever is one of their victims.
