There were two fatal- All hands accidents in the Shuttle program. The first one was the Challenger blast- which occured during the launch phase in the upper atmosphere- l986. The second was the Columbia accident which broke up and disintegrated on re-entry over the West Coast- this happened in 2003. One occured on the way up- the other on the descent.l
Challenger, Columbia
Two out of five Space Shuttles: Challager and Columbia, were the only 2 shuttles to be lost, challager exploded 72 seconds after takeoff while Columbia burned up in the atmosphere.
5 different space shuttles have been launched on 129 missions.
6. Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavour.
5 NASA Shuttles have been into space. Of those 5 shuttles, 2 were unfortunately destroyed. There has been a total of 135 Space missions using the space shuttle between the years 1980 and 2011 :)
There is a total of five space shuttles that belonged to NASA. These shuttles are Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavour, Columbia, and Challenger. However, they have all been retired from service.
There have been two space shuttles that exploded during launch: Challenger in 1986 and Columbia in 2003.
There has been 128 launched and only 1 has failed so.....127.
As of now, the space shuttle program has been retired and no new shuttles are being built. The last space shuttle was the Space Shuttle Atlantis, which retired in 2011. The focus has shifted towards developing new spacecraft for space exploration.
6 TotalChallenger, Columbia,Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavour, and Buran (Soviet reusable spacecraft) There have been six Space Shuttles. Five have flown in space. The first, Enterprise, flew only in Earth's atmosphere.
4 Space Shuttles existed in 2011. Including the test vehicle, Space Shuttle Enterprise. Space Shuttles that actually went into space? 3. Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour.
Currently NASA have three space shuttles Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour.
