Because the wings are shaped in such a way that lift is only created during forward motion. Look up the Bernoulli Principle.

When air or other media, like water, moves over a surface shaped in a way that allows the media to travel faster over the upper surface, producing lower pressure on the the opposite surface; the upper surface is pulled up, just like a wing or to the side, in the case of a special type of keel used on racing yachts.

Will not work going the other way.
